Overview

The university of Edinburgh is one of the world’s top universities and placed 20th in the 2020 QS World University Rankings (19th for Medicine). It has a very high research output and draws a high proportion of international students. Getting into medicine at Edinburgh is notoriously competitive.

University Life

The University of Edinburgh is a gorgeous university that is built into the historic city. There is a main campus (called George Square) that contains the main library as well as other buildings for educational purposes (e.g. lectures, seminars etc). As a medical student, you spend your first 2 years learning mainly the core science and fundamentals behind disease. You spend most of your time in lectures at the hospital or George square.

As you enter your clinical years, you spend more time at the hospitals (mainly the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh and the Western General Hospital). However, you can also be placed on peripheral placements in Scotland (such as the Borders General Hospital, or Victoria Hospital in Fife) as well as GP surgeries. These placements are incredibly useful for developing your skills and you get some great teaching from these outside locations. You also become really close with the other students you are on placement with, and it gives you a chance to explore some really beautiful parts of Scotland.

Social Life

This ‘Assessment Day’ includes a series of short interviews that are based on the core attributes needed of medical doctors. These attributes are outlined in a document from the Medical Schools’ council. It is worth being familiar with this information and adjusting your interview accordingly.
