Importance of Work Experience

“It’s not the lack of resources, it’s your lack of resourcefulness that stops you” - Tony Robbins

🩺Understand the realities of medicine

Any information or experiences you gain: in talking to healthcare professionals (not necessarily just doctors) and work experience in a healthcare setting will be so valuable. Improving your skills and developing a better understanding of medicine will require you to be proactive, resilient and organised.  We cannot stress how important it is to throw yourself into any experiences you have the opportunity to do.

⌨️ Your Personal Statement

In the summer of Year 12 (right before Year 13), you write a personal statement which forms the bulk of your application to apply to medical schools in early Year 13. The more work experience, the more opportunities you have to gain an insight into medicine.

However, work experience is all about quality over quantity, universities will not be impressed simply by the fact that you did fancy work experience in a top UK hospital or abroad. What they are looking for is a realistic understanding of medicine alongside demonstrations of your characteristics that would make you a good doctor.

🤠Character-building

Depending upon the length and intensity of your work placement, you will be able to further develop essential skills including but not limited to:

  • Organisational skills

    • Time management

  • Communication skills

    • Willingness and ability to express information clearly and effectively

    • Empathy & emotional intelligence

Start early, develop the habits and mindset that will make you a more well-rounded person.

🔥 Feed your passion

Medicine is your dream career so enjoy the work experience; undergoing any form of work experience is a huge privilege. You only get out what you put in.
